Back to School in COVID-19
It’s back to school time again, although we know that it looks and feels different for everyone because of COVID-19. Whether you have chosen in person, virtual, or a hybrid school option for your kiddos, preparing for the school year is important. Here are some tips we have gathered to help families prep for the new school year.
- Have conversations: Be sure to discuss with your kiddos what is happening and why school may look different this year. Kiddos in care are already dealing with a lot of changes and stresses; having a conversation on what to expect and how to handle the anxiety can help mitigate the stress.
- Create a schedule: Schedules are key in a normal school year, with homework, sports, extra curricular activities, etc. Now there is a potential to have in person some days, virtual, LIVE classes, etc. Schedules are helpful because they provide kiddos stability and predictability especially during this time of change.
- Set up a learning space: Whether kiddos are going back in full or part time, it is important to have a space for them to work on their classes or complete homework. Let them be a part of choosing and setting up the space so they have some ownership in the process.
- Be prepared: Be sure to stock up on hand sanitizer, masks, Kleenex, and disinfecting wipes. In the midst of a global pandemic, plus flu season, good hygiene is crucial. If your kiddos are going to school, have conversations about the importance of wearing their mask (if applicable), washing their hands, covering their cough, etc. It’s also important to have a plan if you or someone in your family becomes sick or has to quarantine.
- Healthy habits: In addition to good hygiene practices, it’s important to emphasize healthy nutrition, physical activity, and good sleep.
- Prepare a story: If kiddos are new to care, the district, or your family, back to school can be stressful to have to explain to classmates their living situation. Have a conversation with your kiddo about how they will answer questions and how they will explain their living situation. Every kiddo is different, so be sure to listen and see what they are comfortable with.
